What is Moot Court?  A program through which students will develop an argument based on a fictional "problem" that is before an Appellate Court

  • Students will be presented with a legal problem that is relevant to their lives and could be argued at an Appellate Court.

  • Students will prepare a 10 minute argument for one side of the issue, answer corresponding questions, and respond to opponents’ arguments during the qualifying and final rounds of the competition.

  • Coaches will guide the students’ preparation, and attorney assistance will be available for each team throughout the preparation.

  • Each argument will be presented by a team of 2, and teams will be balanced by grade level and interest.

Who is eligible to participate?  Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student who resides in Scotch Plains or Fanwood

  • Applicants must be available to attend a virtual mandatory organizational meeting on February 23, 2023 at 7 PM (via Zoom). Applicants may withdraw immediately following the info session, but withdrawing once practice begins may jeopardize the partner's ability to participate.  Please apply only if you believe you could complete the process.

  • Registration for this event closed on 2/21.

Other Logistics:

  • Practices will be self initiated with an assigned coach.

  • The expected time commitment is 2 to 3 hours per week until the competition in April.
